Baroque art is the painting and sculpture associated with the Baroque cultural movement, a movement often identified with Absolutism and the Counter Reformation; the existence of important Baroque art and architecture in non-absolutist and Protestant states, however, undercuts this linking.

  • Josefa de Óbidos was born in Seville, Spain in 1630
  • Josefa's first known works are engravings executed in 1646. They demonstrate that she had achieved a high degree of skill by the age of sixteen
  • her father Baltazar is considered to be the main influence upon her.

  • She is considered to be one of the most accomplished painters of seventeenth century Portugal and is especially significant because of the recognition she gained among the Baroque painters, an art period which was dominated by male painters.
